D. program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell emphasizes the generation, critical evaluation and application of knowledge in the field of Leadership PK- Higher Education. The Ph. D. (requiring the highest level of research and content expertise) is recognized as the terminal degree for persons pursing a future career in research universities and other policy and research organizations. Students admitted to this degree may study on a part- time or full- time basis (there is a limited number of Teaching and Research Assistantships available for suitably qualified full- time students). The Leadership in Schooling Ed. D. degree is designed to enhance a candidate's skills both as a researcher and as an instructional leader of PK- 1. An Ed. D. in Leadership in Schooling empowers the individual to improve leadership, teaching and learning, and to explore innovative solutions to educational problems. Students who enter this doctoral program will soon find that our emphasis on research and its application to practice will assist them in forming and investigating questions that are of personal, community, national, and international interest. В Cohort Model. The Ed. D. requires 4. 2 credits of study beyond the master's, Ed. S. or CAGS. В All courses are fully online. Candidates are admitted in the summer to their cohort and are expected to take 2 courses each semester, summer, fall and spring. Additionally, candidates must attend a one- week, summer residency each year they are in the program. It is possible to complete coursework and dissertation in three years if this path is followed. Seminars are held throughout each semester to discuss research, policy issues related to preparing the dissertation, and for candidates to present their work to their peers for feedback. These seminars are highly valued by students, as they ensure program cohesion for students while they explore their individual research interests. Doctoral students participate in the annual colloquium held at the Graduate School of Education. Many graduate students have also presented papers at regional and local conferences.
